Award in Advanced EFL Teaching Skills

Starting 20th March - Course Benefits

  • It will give you an edge in the employment market – employers look for teachers with upgraded skills to help them stay at the cutting edge of the industry.
  • It will deepen your ELT knowledge and further your teaching skills, offering a wider range of options in your classroom teaching.
  • It will help you to feel comfortable and confident using educational technology – including some of the most popular online teaching apps.
  • It’s funded by the Training Pays (75% refund to eligible applicants) and Get Qualified (70% tax credit to eligible applicants) training schemes, which means you only pay a quarter of the course fee. 

Course Delivery

  • All sessions relate to each other within a clear framework of CPD course objectives.
  • Delivered by two course leaders (Richard Twigg and Alan Marsh) with wide teacher development experience both in Malta and internationally.
  • 100% online, part time - 2 sessions a week.

Accreditation

Accredited by the Malta Further and Higher Education Authority as a Higher Education course/programme and is pegged to the MQF/EQF at Level 5 – which means it’s recognised and accredited throughout the EU.

Entry Requirements

English Language teachers with a minimum of 1 year’s full time teaching experience (1000 hours) Post Cambridge ESOL CELTA or Trinity Cert. TESOL or ELT Council Malta TEFL Cert. These teachers will be looking to upgrade their teaching skills and may not be ready to commit to other qualifications for experienced teachers due to financial or other constraints.

Entry Requirements

English Language teachers with a minimum of 1000 hours teaching experience Post Cambridge ESOL CELTA or Trinity Cert. TESOL or ELT Council Malta TEFL Cert. All applicants should be in possession of basic digital literacy skills and have full access to computer equipment and internet as the course will be delivered 100% online. A complete CV will be required to demonstrate minimum teaching hours plus the digital literacy skills requirement.

  • Involves 25 hours of contact time, and a total of 100 hours of learning, including self-study and final assessment.
  • The award is worth 5 ECTS’s.
  • The target audience is adults of any age. 
  • The entire course will be delivered in English.
  • A minimum of 80% attendance is required to receive the award.

The total fee will be €800 but residents of Malta will be eligible for funding  under these schemes: 


  • Training Pays Scheme (TPS) Course Code: A-0368.  (75% of Training fees paid refunded upon successful Course Completion)


  • Get Qualified Scheme (70% Tax credit on successful Course Completion).

The course lasts 12 weeks - Input sessions take place over a period of 9 weeks, allowing 3 weeks for the completion and submission of final assignment

Richard Twigg

Richard is an experienced teacher and teacher trainer. He has taught in the UK, Italy and Malta and has been a director of studies and director of International House Milan. He holds a Cambridge ESOL CELTA and Cambridge ESOL DELTA as well as Certificate in Education and Teaching Training certificate. Richard is also a professional Neurolanguage coach.

Alan is an experienced teacher trainer and EFL author. He has taught in the UK, Italy and Malta and was the director of studies of International House Gozo and Chairperson of the Board of Administration of International House Rome. He is a CELTA, DELTA and Malta TEFL Certificate trainer. Together with Richard Twigg, he has designed and written the Advanced Certificate in EFL and together they will be the main course tutors on the programme.
